- Prostate cancer is the most common malignant cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in American men
- If detected early, patients with aggressive forms of prostate cancer can be treated before it metastasizes and migrates to the lymph glands or to bone; undetected it can be deadly
- If non-aggressive forms of prostate cancer are mistakenly identified as malignant, unnecessary surgical intervention or other invasive therapies may be used, which are expensive, potentially life-altering and may lead to serious complications
- Current detection methods have severe limitations: (a) Digital Rectal Exam... inconclusive results, even in high risk men; (b) PSA... 80% false positives and 20% false negatives; (c) Biopsies... accurate only if the biopsy needle actually hits a tumor, which it often fails to do
